Purpose

LanguageARC (Language Analysis Research Community) is a community of Citizen Linguists who contribute to projects developed by researchers at organizations around the world. LanguageARC expands and accelerates language related education, research and technology development by involving the public in providing and analyzing massive volumes of data for languages and situations that are currently understudied. LanguageARC uses the Internet to connect researchers to people like you who are willing to contribute time and effort to improve the world’s understanding of its languages. To accomplish this goal, LanguageARC shares the data and judgments it collects with researchers worldwide.

Your Contributions to LanguageARC

Depending upon which LanguageARC tasks you decide to do, your contributions could be judgements about data, samples of your language, posts you make to the discussion forums or any combination of these. We never need, and you should avoid giving, any sensitive, personally identifying information (e.g. address, phone number) or any information you do not want shared.

If you contribute to LanguageARC, you agree to only contribute data and judgements that are yours (e.g. your own judgments or recordings of your speech or text). You must not copy from other websites, books, broadcasts or other contributors, etc. Doing so could actually harm scientific research.

It is never our intention to ask you to violate any local law or custom in your contributions to LanguageARC. However, we cannot know every local law across the world, now and into the future. If you encounter anything in LanguageARC at odds with law or custom in your locale, you should feel free to skip that item, task or project. You are responsible for complying with all applicable laws in your activities for LanguageARC.

You also agree that LanguageARC researchers may use your contributions in any way that furthers scientific research, essentially trusting us treat your data appropriately. We need such broad permissions so that we can adapt to future changes in law and science. These permissions are non-exclusive as explained next.

Your Use of Your Contribution to LanguageARC

You retain ownership of any contribution you make to LanguageARC. You may use, modify or share your individual contributions in any way you like. However, you may not modify, distribute or use outside LanguageARC any data that LanguageARC presents to you or any contribution from other LanguageARC users.

Privacy

LanguageARC complies with the University of Pennsylvania Privacy Statement found here.
